Do you know the difference between working it and winging it?

I don’t know a single business owner who doesn’t believe they are working hard. We all do. But I’ll let you in on a little secret…there are a lot of business owners who are just winging it in their business.

For a brief moment in time, I was even one of them!

I was busy. Moving from project to project. Prospecting, networking, creating, marketing. Expending so much energy and wondering why I wasn’t seeing the income to match. The truth was that I was winging it. I lost sight of my plan and was confusing busyness with business!

There are some key differences between working it and winging it!

When you work it:

  • You have a plan
  • You set goals
  • You create projects to work towards your goals
  • You set deadlines that matter
  • You use completed projects as stepping stones to the next big thing

People who are working it are very purposeful in the things that they give their energy to and are happier for it. They say NO more often to distractions and put their goals, projects and plans first. They take advantage of resources, mentors and collaborators to help them move forward. They realize they can’t go it alone and ask for help.

When you wing it:  

  • If you ever created a plan, it hasn’t seen the light of day for a while
  • You spend your day jumping from fire to fire
  • You do more of the things you hate and less time doing the things you love
  • You’ve never hit a deadline
  • You struggle to make ends meet

People who are winging it are perpetually tired from running in circles. Working without a clear vision keeps them on the hamster wheel chasing shiny new objects. Jumping from one thing to the other makes it nearly impossible for them to complete a project and reach their goal.

Another big danger for those who “wing it” is that they spend a lot of time comparing their work to others and trying to copy what they do, without thinking of what is right for them. This game of “I can do that too” is about working someone else’s game plan instead of their own.

It is a tough place to be in, but not an impossible one to get out of.

Start by asking yourself a few pointed questions.

  • How do you get your business to take flight the right way?
  • Why did you go into business in the first place?
  • What is your big vision?
  • What are the goals that will get you there?
  • What projects should you give your energy to?
  • What are you going to say NO to?
  • Who will you have in your corner to help motivate you and keep you accountable?
  • How will you measure success?

Figuring out the answers to these questions is the starting point to go from winging it to working it in your business.
