Let’s face it we all seek validation of our self worth one way or another. Even if by email.

What do I mean?

We like feeling needed. We still get that rush from being acknowledged. We still feel that someone is sending us “love” when they email us.

Think back to that famous notification “You’ve got mail.” Remember the feeling of joy and anticipation you felt when you realized someone sent you email? Okay, at that time, it was partially “shiny new object” syndrome. But today, don’t you still feel excited when you see a full inbox? Don’t you get disappointed if you open your inbox and (gasp!) there’s no new mail!)

For some having a full inbox is a testimony to how busy we are and how much others value our input or attention. Afterall would they have taken the time to send a message if your opinion isnt important? Truthfully yes they would.

Most times sent emails aren’t necessary. Occasionally, it’s legitimately delegated work. Then we have the jokes/forwards. Conversations that should take place in a call or face-to-face meeting. Others would rather write about some projects than actually do them. The bulk of most emails sent are CYA (covering your ass-ets). Unfortunately, most email messages represent postponed decisions.

The average person has 3000 unread mails sitting in their inbox! That’s a lot of “love.” Yet we respond to the email alert like willing lambs to the time slaughter knowing we’ll get overwhelmed. Why?

Realize that your self worth is not directly tied to how many emails are sitting in your inbox. It’s an unhealthy competition that you costs you more in the long run.  To paraphrase Ghandi, be the change you want in the world and challenge yourself to view email differently.
