The holidays are almost behind us and so are the parties, shopping trips, travel plans, guests and let’s not discuss trips to return the gifts!
With so much happening at the end of the year, did you feel overwhelmed trying to stay productive, prioritize what’s important and…plan for next year?
If you felt that you’re ending the year in a state of chaos, you likely went through the whole year that way. How do you get off the roller coaster and lose that feeling?
It’s time to ditch the juggling act!
At a conference a couple of years ago, I watched Dan Thurmon, a keynote speaker juggle on stage while teaching about his concept, “off balance, on purpose”.
Off balance, on purpose basically means that at any given time, we have so much up in the air that we will never have balance. So the only way to make the juggling act work, is to be purposeful about what we spend our time on.
Are you “off balance and off purpose?”
So we all know the quest for balance is an endless struggle. Trying to do it all and give it our “all” keeps us off balance and off purpose—feeling like we are putting our energy in the wrong place.
Small business owners and entrepreneurs are especially guilty of trying to maintain this juggling act.
Getting to “off balance and on purpose?”
To regain a little bit of the “purpose” and passion, it’s time to refocus on the things that matter. Start by answering a few key questions:
- What are the different things that pull at your time?
- What are the biggest distractions?
- What systems do you have in place prioritize what’s important?
- What projects do you work on first?
- What do you say no to?
- What do you do to de-stress?
- Who do you ask for help?
Staying productive means…
I’ve discovered that the word “productive” means different things to different people. A simple definition may be getting the right things done at the right time and in the right order.
Being productive may include reducing stress, having more time to enjoy our downtime, being able to relax while accomplishing our goals. At the end of the day, we all want to feel fulfilled.
So take some time now to set yourself up for the best year yet. Make a list of your important things. Line them up and identify the right order and time to get them done.
